Google Business Profile optimization that wins the map pack

Most local trades searches are decided in the three-business map pack — not the ten blue links under it. This is how a Google Business Profile earns one of those three slots, and keeps it.

The map pack is where the local call is decided

When someone searches “electrician near me” or “roof repair [city]”, Google shows a map with three businesses above the regular results. That block — the local pack — takes the majority of the clicks and nearly all of the phone calls on a local search. Rank fourth on the map and you are effectively invisible for that term, no matter how good your website is.

Your Google Business Profile is the listing that competes for those three slots. It is a separate asset from your website, with its own ranking signals, and for a trades business it is usually the single highest-leverage thing to fix first. A dialed-in profile can put a low-authority, brand-new trades site in the pack in weeks — long before the same site could rank organically.

What we do not do: promise you the top slot. Google decides the pack in real time on relevance, distance and prominence, and anyone guaranteeing a #1 map ranking is selling a scam signal Google itself flags. We optimize every signal you control and sell the outcome — more of the local searches that end in a call.

Local map pack · 3 slots

  • Your business #1
  • A competitor #2
  • A competitor #3

Most local clicks stop here — not on page one below it.

Google ranks the pack on three things. We optimize all three.

Relevance (does the profile match the search), distance (how close you are to the searcher) and prominence (how established and active you look) are the signals Google names for local ranking. Every lever below feeds one of them.

01

Primary category is the biggest lever you control

Your primary category tells Google what searches you are even eligible for. “Roofing contractor” competes for different searches than “Roofing supply store”. We set the primary category to the money term and add every accurate secondary category so you surface for the full range of work you do — without miscategorizing, which quietly kills eligibility.

02

Service area and address set the map you can win

Google ranks on distance from the searcher, so the profile’s address and service-area setup decide which towns you can realistically place in. A storefront ranks strongest near the pin; a service-area business hides the address and lists the areas it covers. Getting this wrong caps your reach before any other work matters.

03

Reviews — rating and recency decide the pack

Of the three prominence signals, reviews are the one you can move fastest. Star rating and how recently the last reviews landed both feed pack position, and a steady stream of fresh, real reviews beats a higher count that went stale. We build the after-job ask-and-respond system and keep you replying to every review — replies are a signal too.

04

Photos, hours and completeness feed prominence

A profile with real job photos added on a cadence, accurate hours (including holiday and “open now” signals), a full services list and a complete description reads as an active, real business — which is exactly the prominence signal Google rewards. Thin, half-built profiles lose the pack to competitors who finished theirs.

05

Profile ↔ website consistency

The map pack and your website are one system. Consistent name, address and phone across the profile and the site, plus money pages that match the services the profile lists, tell Google the entity is real and relevant. A dialed-in profile pointing at a thin site — or a good site with a neglected profile — leaves rankings on the table.

06

Posts, Q&A and products keep it alive

Profile posts, seeded Q&A and product/service entries are freshness and relevance signals most competitors ignore. Used honestly — real offers, real answers — they keep the profile active and give a searcher more reasons to call you instead of the shop next to you in the pack.

A profile is half the system. The money pages are the other half.

The map pack gets a searcher to notice you; a page built to make them call is what turns the click into a booked job. That is why we never treat the profile as a standalone project. The categories on your profile should match the services on your site, the areas you list should have real pages behind them, and the reviews you earn should point at a site that loads fast on the phone the searcher is holding.

The order that works: fix the profile so you place in the pack, build the money pages so the traffic converts, and run the review engine so the position holds. Do one without the others and you either rank and lose the lead, or convert traffic you never earned.

This is the same four-lever method behind every trade we work with — roofers, plumbers, electricians, HVAC and contractors — because the map pack works the same way for all of them even though what the customer is searching for does not.

Google Business Profile questions trades owners ask

How is a Google Business Profile different from my website?

They are two separate assets. Your website ranks in the regular (organic) results; your Google Business Profile competes for the three map-pack slots and the calls that come with them. They share signals — consistent name and phone, matching services — but you optimize them differently, and for most trades the profile is the faster win.

How long until I show up in the map pack?

Often weeks rather than months, because the profile responds faster than organic rankings. Category and service-area fixes can move you quickly; review velocity and completeness compound over the following weeks. It depends on your market’s competition and how close you are to the searcher — which is exactly why we never promise a specific position or date.

Do reviews really change my ranking?

Yes. Reviews are part of the prominence signal Google uses for the pack, and both your star rating and how recently reviews arrived matter. A steady stream of fresh, real reviews with replies beats a big pile that stopped a year ago. We build the system that keeps them coming after every job.

Can you guarantee I’ll be #1 on the map?

No, and you should leave any agency that does. Google ranks the pack live on relevance, distance and prominence, and treats guaranteed-ranking promises as a scam signal. We optimize every signal you control and measure success in calls and booked jobs, not a position we can’t honestly promise.

I’m a service-area business with no storefront — does this still work?

It works, it just changes the setup. A service-area business hides its address and lists the areas it covers, and ranks on proximity to the searcher within those areas. We configure the profile correctly for how you actually operate so you compete across your real service map instead of one pin.
